2004-10-27 - Total Lunar Eclipse

There was a total lunar eclipse on October 27, 2004. I went out throughout the night to take some pictures of its progression. People who have Sony cameras may understand my notations under the images as different photo modes of the camera.

(+ is the low light, long exposure mode

( is the bright light, low ISO mode

Nothing is the standard mode

I took at least one picture in each of the modes each time I went out, since each has its own benefits for this situation. As the eclipse progressed, each mode got better or worse for the particular effect, so no one mode would be the best image for the entire event. I only started taking pictures at ~9:00p, and took my last one at ~10:15p.

Each row contains photos from the same time, just using the different exposures listed above. Even towards the end, the pictures that appear black do have some moon 'haze' when you "view the full size image" (the link that is up by the printing information). The second page contains some extra low light photos, along with some using the full digital zoom.
